It is not known whether L- or H-type BSE are newly emerging forms of BSE or whether they have existed for some time. No detailed epidemiological investigations have been conducted to investigate the possible causes. Therefore, it is not possible to rule out feed related, environmental or spontaneous causes for these types of BSE. Feed bans prohibiting the use of ruminant meat and bone meal in ruminant feeds (such as the ban in place in the United States) and the removal of SRM (specified risk materials) should prevent the spread of these new forms of BSE in the same way it prevents the spread of classical BSE.
